António Maurício is a Geoscience Scientist and Professor with about 31 years of experience (18 of post-doctoral activity) in several fields of investigation, mainly involving Water-Rock Interaction in Meteoric-Environments; Cultural Heritage-Environmentally-induced natural materials decay diagnosis and control; 2D Image and Data Analysis and more recently X-Ray Microtomography (3D microscopy).

António João Cruz holds a PhD in Analytical Chemistry (1993), but since then has developed its activity in research and teaching in the field of the materials of the works of art and its scientific analysis. He also became interested in the problems and the history of conservation and restoration.

Currently he teaches Conservation Science at Escola Superior de Tecnologia de Tomar, Instituto Politécnico de Tomar, Portugal, and he is a researcher of CITAR – Centro de Investigação em Ciência e Tecnologia das Artes, Universidade Católica, Porto, Portugal.

Carlos Nodal Monar

O Dr. Carlos Nodal é licenciado em Historia da Arte da Universidade Autónoma de Madrid (1993) e post-graduado da Universidade Católica de Porto (2004 e 2007), com uma tese sobre “Policromia del retábulo barroco nel Noroeste de Portugal”. Trabalhou 11 anos como restaurador em Portugal e 5 anos como docente de Restauro e Conservação de Pintura e Escultura na Universidade Católica de Porto. Desde 2007 se transferiu nas Astúrias e se dedicou a investigação no âmbito da Fundação Maria Cristina Masaveu sobre “Policromia de retablos en el Norte de Espana: Astúrias”.

Carolina Sofia Sarrazola Barata é bacharel em Conservação e Restauro pelo Instituto Politécnico de Tomar, pós-graduada em Peritagem em Arte/Mobiliário pela Escola Superior de Artes Decorativas da Fundação Ricardo Espírito Santo Silva, mestre em Química Aplicada ao Património pela Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa, com dissertação subordinada ao tema "Caracterização de Materiais e de Técnicas de Policromia da Escultura Portuguesa Sobre Madeira de Produção Erudita e de Produção Popular da Época Barroca".

Elsa Murta received a Bachelor in Conservation and Restoration of polychrome sculptures at the Instituto de José de Figueiredo, in Lisbon, in 1986. In2011 she got a Master Degree in Decorative Arts by the Catholic University of Portugal with a specialization on gilded wood decoration (“talha dourada”).

Dr. Irina Sandu is a Conservation Scientist with 16 years of experience (11 of post-doctoral activity) in the field of investigation, diagnosis and authentication of cultural heritage assets. 

Her scientific activity is expressed in 12 monographs, 2 book-chapters, more than 60 papers in peer-reviewed international journals and conference proceedings.

Lia Jorge

Lia Jorge has a degree in Art History by Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto (FLUP), as well as a BA(hons) in Conservation by Camberwell College of Arts – University of the Arts London. She has also attained an MA degree in Museum Studies by ISCTE – IUL, inLisbon.

 Between 2004 and 2005, she has worked as a volunteer at Museu da Música (Lisbon) and at theCummingMuseum(London). She then went on for a conservation internship at the Museu Nacional de Etnologia.

Nuno Leal is a Geologist (Speciality Geochemistry) with 20 years of experience in the field of Pure Geology (Petrology and Geochemistry), with Research and Teaching duties in the Geology Department of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon.

Rita Veiga holds a BA (2007) and a MA (2010) in Conservation and Restoration of paintings, delivered by the Portuguese Catholic University (UCP). As part of her master’s, she performed an internship at Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza (Madrid), in the paintings conservation-restoration department; and presented a thesis on the execution techniques and degradation of paintings on tinplate.

Sílvia Ferreira is graduated in Philosophy, has a master degree in Art History and a PhD in the same area of studies. In recent years she has collaborated on several research projects related to wood carved altarpieces in Portugal, mainly in Lisbon, which included courses, seminars, conferences and publications. She also participates in several research projects in the wider context of religious history, particularly in the context of the history of religious orders and brotherhoods of Lisbon from the Sixteenth to Eighteenth centuries.

Solange Muralha is a physical-chemist with 7 years of experience in the field of conservation science. She held a PhD in physical-chemistry in 2005 from the University of Lisbon. The same year she started her research in the field of Conservation Science at the University College of London, with special emphasis on Islamic illuminations, and maintained several collaborations with the Institute of Archaeology and the Vitoria and Albert museum. Later on, she joined the Conservation unit at the New University of Lisbon.

Dr. Stepanka Kuckova received the doctoral degree in 2006. She has experiences in application of analytical chemistry and biochemistry in the field of cultural heritage. She developed a completely new technique for unambiguous and fast identification of proteinaceous binders in colour layers of artworks using peptide mass mapping.

Dr. Tito Busani earned the degree in Nuclear Engineering from the Polytechnic of Milan (Italy) and a PhD in material science and nanotechnology at University J. Fourier ofGrenoble(France). His major research for the last 12 years was on oxides, ceramics and polymers in the field of transistors and renewable energy applications. He has long experience in the research and application of novel materials, at the nano-and micro-scale, with defined properties and performance characteristics.
