Nuno Leal is a Geologist (Speciality Geochemistry) with 20 years of experience in the field of Pure Geology (Petrology and Geochemistry), with Research and Teaching duties in the Geology Department of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon.

In 2008, he started working as a Assistant Researcher in the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the New University of Lisbon (FCT-UNL), mainly relating Geology and Mineralogy with Conservation and Restoration problems. Hisresearch themes deals with diverse materials, ranging from archaeological materials (stone and ceramics), to more recent ones, like paper, metals (both threads in textiles and employed in manufacturing metal statues), paintings, ceramics, glass, and, of course, mortars and stones (namely biodeterioration issues). All these themes have been approached in close collaboration with researchers of the Conservation and Restoration Department, at FCT-UNL.

He has strong analytical skills, developed all over the years, including petrographic microscopy, fluid inclusions in rocks, saline fog chamber experiments, and SEM analyses.

In present, he is involved in various research projects, including ceramic petrographic characterization, saline fog alteration of stone materials and, of course, gilded surfaces characterization. He is also teaching at the Earth Sciences Department (FCT-UNL) in the area of Petrology and Geochemistry, as well as in the area of General Geology for Conservation and Restoration students (Graduation and Master levels).
