Solange Muralha is a physical-chemist with 7 years of experience in the field of conservation science. She held a PhD in physical-chemistry in 2005 from the University of Lisbon. The same year she started her research in the field of Conservation Science at the University College of London, with special emphasis on Islamic illuminations, and maintained several collaborations with the Institute of Archaeology and the Vitoria and Albert museum. Later on, she joined the Conservation unit at the New University of Lisbon. The research interests follow archaeometric studies of historical glazes and glass, colour and colour materials in illuminations, and the development of synthetic organic pigments. The researcher acquired a proficiency in many analytical techniques, but her expertize is focused on Raman spectroscopy. Following this she is a consultant in many projects where Raman spectroscopy is relevant technique.
Solange Muralha is the principal investigator in a project on medieval glazed tiles (azulejos). She collaborates in other projects on medieval illuminations and the GILT-Teller project, and with many institutions such as the Institute of Museums and Conservation, Santa Casa da Misericórdia, Palácio Nacional de Sintra, Museu Nacional do Azulejo, Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, Direcção Geral de Cultura do Centro, Museu Nacional de Arqueologia e Museu do Oriente.
At the university the researcher has been a lecturer and supervisor to many master and PhD dissertations.
