Target population

The main targeted populations is the group of technicians that are related with processes of technological choice or technological investments. Usually these technicians have already post-graduation (Master degree) or are very experienced and qualified.
This type of technicians can work already in the public administration offices (large national laboratories, or governmental entities with specialisation in these fields) as well in large sized companies where that type of option can be placed for technological re-conversion processes, or for entrepreneurial development. They can work already in different workplaces, such as:

  • - public administration offices
  • - large national laboratories, or hospitals and health clinics
  • - governmental entities with specialisation in these fields
  • - large sized companies facing technological re-conversion processes,
  • - companies with entrepreneurial development strategies in emergent technologies
  • - technology assessment and innovation consultancy.

Other type of PhD students can come from the academic field. Some of them hold already a post-graduation degree (MA, MSc, etc.) and have experience at research institutions.
To each open call for admission we have had 12 to 15 intentions to enroll. Most are Portuguese, but we have started to receive proposals from other countries (Brazil, Mexico, Turkey, India, Austria, Spain)
Some students from PhD programmes in other European countries are also interested to attend seminars and lectures in this programme. Some used already the ERASMUS agreements between with UNL to attend courses of one semester. Most of them return after that period to participate in public events of PDAT, as the Annual Winter Schools on TA or the Doctoral COnference on TA with special sessions.
If this programme support is approved, it will be possible to announce it in Germany and coordinate with KIT the supervision support. Until now that has been possible in few cases but the supervision work has been only supported financially by KIT.
With the support from FCT, we expect that in every call we can have around 20 proposals, and the number from Portuguese and from other European countries are expected to increase quickly. Even during the 1st edition (2014-2018) we intend to open the target population to US, Canada and Japan post-graduation students, while the contacts have started already and have large potential. The TA communities in those countries are in a process of institutionalisation and will be very promising in the next 10 years.
