Governance

The PhD programme (PDAT) has a Scientific Board with the programme coordinator, president of the department responsible for the programme and professors that are lecturing at the programme and belong to other departments. This board is approved by the department (DCSA) scientific board and by the Faculty Dean. Their names are the following:

  • - António B. Moniz, programme director (PD), Dep. Applied Social Sciences-DCSA, FCT-UNL
  • - Maria Paula Diogo, president of DCSA, FCT-UNL
  • - Lia Vasconcelos, Dep. Environmental Sciences and Engineering-DCEA
  • - João Goulão Crespo, Dep. Chemistry, FCT-UNL, and UNL vice-Rector
  • - Armin Grunwald, Director of Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology

The research centre CESNOVA plays the role of the main centre involved in the organisation of the PhD programme. The webpage where most English information is presented located at the IET (the FCT-UNL pole of CESNOVA) webpage (http://iet.fct.unl.pt/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=232&Itemid=271).
The International Scientific Board of IET/CESNOVA (http://iet.fct.unl.pt/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=14&Itemid=42) is also assessing the programme in coordination with the external supervisory committee (ESC).
The Scientific Board meets every year to plan the activities for that year and take the necessary decisions for the current management of the programme. This board reports to the president of the department that is responsible for the programme and to the Dean of the Faculty.
Every year the PD organises a workshop with the students fo different stages to discuss and assess the activities in the previous academic year and present suggestions that will be discussed and taken at the scientific board. Usually these workshop are held in September, and the scientific board meetings in October.
When this FCT proposal is approved it will be possible to include one representative of the external supervisory committee (ESC) in the scientific board. That was not done until now due to financial difficulties to support the participation of that member.
When the first PhD students achieve their degree they should elect one member to take also part in this board. This means that there are now 4 members at the Programme Scientific Board, but in 2014 they will become 5 with a representative of the PhD alumni (PDAT). If this FCT proposal is approved it will be possible to support the integration of a 6th member from the ESC. This Scientific Board will also define a strategy for students placement after they finish the thesis public discussion and approval. Such strategy will be coordinated with the ESC support.
The financial administration of the programme has been done by the FCT-UNL administrative services (fees, salaries, infra-structure, student enrollment, ERASMUS agreement management, etc.). This administration is done in coordination with the PD, the presidency of the department (DCSA) and the faculty dean (FCT-UNL).
