Iron-gall ink metal-tannin complex characterization
The main goal of the fourth task is to determine the structure of iron complexes with polyphenols identified in the iron gall extracts and inks. We will thus perform the determination of the crystalline structures of iron complexes with gallotannins from single-crystal or powder synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, as well as investigation of the structural features of the isolated compound by several solid-state and solution characterization methods.
Major components in the polyphenol mixture will be isolated and we will use them as standards for the structural characterization. Structural characterization will be further complemented with in-house powder XRD, vibrational spectroscopy (FT-IR and FT-Raman), thermal analyses (thermogravimetric analysis, TGA and differential scanning calorimetry, DSC) and microanalysis (CHN elemental analysis).
