PhD on the Study of New Packaging Materials based on Cellulose Derivatives, April 2004 at Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCT/UNL), in the field of Materials Science, speciality in Macromolecular Materials.
Since 2018, he is an Associate Professor w/ Habilitation at the Materials Science Department of FCT NOVA (DCM). He is also the Head of the DCM since November 2019. From 2008 to 2014 he was vice-director of the Materials Research Centre/Institute of Nanostructures, Nanomodeling and Nanofabrication - i3N|CENIMAT. He is the Coordinator of the Soft and Biofunctional Materials Group at CENIMAT/i3N and is Responsible for the Biomaterials Research Line in this research group. He was the coordinator of the MSc in Materials Engineering between 2010 and 2019.
Editor of the journals “Journal of Composites and Biodegradable Polymers”, “International Journal of Chemoinformatics and Chemical Engineering”, "Annals of Materials Science & Engineering", and "SpringerPlus".

R&D activity focused on:

    • (1) Biopolymers and biocomposites.
    • (2) Polymeric liquid crystals (and its biomedical applications).
    • (3) The development and characterization of new biomaterials for Tissue Engineering based on polysaccharides (Chitin/Chitosan and Cellulose) or other biocompatible and biodegradable polymers.
    • (4)The development of multifunctional magnetic nanoparticles for cancer theranostics. Magnetic hyperthermia.
    • (5) Electrospinning
