Welcome Catarina Silva!

We are delightful to welcome our new colleague Catarina to the MARlab team!

Catarina is a biologist and she's finishing her master's degree in Marine Ecology. She is currently a researcher of the PLASTISPHERE project "Understanding microplastic biota composition and dynamics along the coasts of Israel and Portugal".

The project is led by Dr. Paula Sobral and Dr. Marta Martins.

D4Ss is back to the field: summer sampling campaign!

This past few weeks, members from MARlab, with collaboration from MARE-UÉ went back to the Sado estuary to conduct the summer sampling campaign for the D4Ss project.

New BSc-level fellowship: Plastisphere Project

Our new project PLASTISPHERE - UNDERSTANDING MICROPLASTIC BIOTA COMPOSITION AND DYNAMICS ALONG THE COASTS OF ISRAEL AND PORTUGAL, has a fellowship available for candidates with a BSc in the biological sciences area, and currently enrolled in a MSc.

You can find all the details of this fellowship HERE (in portuguese)!

RIVER-SEA Project Presentation @ Quintas do MARE

Quintas do MARE is an initiative where MARE researchers have the opportunity to give short 30 minute lectures about their work to the general public every two weeks. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the initiative addapted to the online format

The lattest session was about the RIVER-SEA project where Ana Pires, Bárbara Sá and Pedro Santos spoke about the work done so far, the results obtained and what's next for the project.

The lecture is available on Youtube!

Diana Rodrigues @ 90 Seconds of Science

Diana Rodrigues, PhD student at MARE-NOVA and MARlab member, was invited to the portuguese radio show 90 Seconds of Science, where she spoke about the work being developed in her PhD. This program airs every week day in the national portuguese radio Antena 1.

Happy Oceans Day!

Did you know that the oceans are connected to human health? They're the earth's lungs as they provide us most of the oxygen that we breathe!

Let's preserve and protect them!

Happy Oceans Day!

MARlab is back!

After the quarantine imposed by the State of Emergency, the MARlab team is returning to the labs, following all safety protocols!

Stay safe!

MARlab helps in the fight against Covid-19!

The MARlab team has contributed with ingredients for the manufacturing of disinfectant gel that will be delivered to the Santa Maria Hospital, in Lisbon.

Around 300 litres of desifected gel will be produced.

MARlab was visited by Mark Minneboo from Plastic Oceans Chile

After meeting Mark Minneboo, Exectuive Director of Plastic Oceans Chile, in the signing day of the Portuguese Pact for Plastics, he reached out to us in order to better understand the work developed in Portugal on plastic pollution.

Mark visited our facilities and met some members of the team. It was a fun and interactive afternoon and we hope to see Mark again really soon.

D4Ss fieldwork starts

MARlab has recently started the Project D4Ss fieldwork, collecting samples from 3 different sites in the Sado estuary.

The team, consisting of MARE-NOVA researchers Marta Martins, Joana Neves and João Pequeno, as well as Mare-UÉVORA researchers, collected the samples on site and then processed the samples in the laboratory in order to assess the functional benthic ecosystem interactions and differences between the sampling sites, which are located in different margins of the estuary.
