Research Summary

Starting from the important set of ceramic remains from the Gharb al-Ândalus preserved in several Portuguese localities, the project intends to deepen the existing knowledge about Islamic Ceramics from the western Iberian Peninsula territory during its Muslim occupation (8th-13th centuries). Embracing the Technologies currently available for the scientific study of heritage, its archeometric investigation will allow to conclude about the materials and production techniques and their evolution over the various periods of Islamic occupation. Furthermore, the knowledge of these high-medieval ceramic objects will allow us to conclude about possible technical differences and commercial exchanges between housing units in the Gharb al-Ândalus territory, comparing with others, his contemporaries, from regions with an important Islamic presence such as Lisbon, Mértola and Santarém. It will be possible to carry out studies on the origin of raw materials employed and about heritages, influences, and intercultural sharing.
