The NanoCell2SEC project aims to create a platform of counterfeit-deterrence printable solutions derived from cellulose nanocrystals composites? structural color. These will be fabricated from sustainable and cost effective natural materials, such as cellulose nanocrystals and other cellulosic derivatives and will be inspired in the reflection naturally observed in insects. These systems, in the appropriate conditions, originate liquid crystalline phases that can be fixed in matrices upon solvent evaporation giving rise to solid structures with structural coloration. The iridescent structures (overt) with selective circularly light reflection (covert) allow an easy and effective mechanism of security verification. Furthermore, active elements will be integrated to increase their security level. The search for new biomimetic photonic structures insects contribute to a better understanding of their optical responses. The project will be conducted by a young and motivated research team.
