Present Situation:

  • Dr. Susana MORETTO holds a PhD on Technology Assessment (UNL) and is now a  detached researcher in Hong Kong from the Interdisciplinar Research Centre on Social Sciences (CICS.NOVA), Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Faculty of Science and Technology.

For some years now I have been conducting research on technology assessment in high-speed trains. For who does not know, technology assessment is about theoretical models to manage technology within society. It was designed to improve policy making and latter brought to strategy making in businesses and industry networks. I am focusing in applying it to high-speed trains technologies. Use technology assessment to bridge the collective of the high-speed train innovation chain with the societal actors driving social innovations. It imply social engagement in technology development beyond often recurred public consultations to ultimately embed their innovations in high-speed train products and services. Applying it could be research bodies as SHIFT2RAIL, but also ERRAC, scaled down to the strategic management teams from railway suppliers and undertakings. My research builds from my learnings from the people I worked with in railways and senior academics in technology assessment I collaborated with during my PhD. Below you can read my professional route and publications. From 2012-2016 Dr. Susana MORETTO  was a visiting researcher and lecturer on innovation management at the Business School of Tongji University, Shanghai, while pursuing her PhD on technology assessment applied to the high-speed train technology system at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal, in joint collaboration with the ITAS - Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany. Dr. MORETTO research addresses strategic innovation management methods and tools (technology assessment and foresight) on complex technological systems with high-social impact looking at the case of high-sped trains.

Previous positions:

Dr. MORETTO entered the railway sector in 2001 as international affairs manager at the European railway manufacturers association UNIFE in Brussels, where she was involved with the launch of ERRAC-Technology Platform. In 2006 she became project officer at the Unit Sustainable Surface Transport in DG Research, European Commission, responsible for supporting coordinating action of FP7 as GLOBALVIEW on the internationalization of European railways. In 2008 Mrs Moretto moved to Lisbon to work for Alstom Transport as market developer for the high-speed train in Portugal. She established a research and develop (R&D) network with local academia and component suppliers in view to capacitate them to integrate the manufacturer global supply chain. She was at the origin of research projects as EcoTrain on innovative light materials and for a design ward with the local universities. From 2010 Mrs Moretto stepped into the academic career when moving to Mexico as visiting researcher and lecturer on innovation management at Autonomous University of Queretaro UAQ and from there in 2012 to the Business School of Tongji University in Shanghai where she was until 2016. She is mainly conducting her research on societal networks involvement in R&D in the high-speed train industry. She is also lecturing on strategic innovation management.
