Raquel Marques holds a Bachelor’s degree in Conservation and Restoration (2012) and a Master’s degree in Conservation and Restoration with a specialisation in Paintings Conservation (2014), both from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology – NOVA University of Lisbon (DCR/FCT-UNL). Her Master’s thesis was entitled “Analysis and Treatment of a Nineteenth Century Oil Painting” supervised by Dr. Leslie Carlyle and co-supervised by Dr. Isabel Pombo Cardoso. In 2015/2016 she was awarded a Paintings Conservation Research Grant from DCR/FCT-UNL during which she developed practical treatment experience, worked on research projects as well as acting as a teaching assistant for lectures and studio practices for Dr. Carlyle’s Bachelor’s  and Master’s courses. For 6 months she was a paintings conservation intern at Stichting Restauratie Atelier Limburg (SRAL) in Maastricht, Netherlands, working under the supervision of Jos van Och (Head of Conservation) and Gwendoline Fife (Senior Paintings Conservator and Researcher).

In 2017, she was awarded a CORES Programme grant to carry out collaborative PhD level research in Conservation and Restoration, between FCT-UNL and LAMS (Laboratoire d’Archéologie Moléculaire et Structurale) in Paris. Her doctoral project focuses on the study of film-formation defects in European 19th century oil paints that lead to paint failure and a loss of image integrity.
