Research Summary

This research focuses on the materials and techniques of Portuguese oil painters (1836-1914) and is integrated in the project “Crossing Borders: History, Materials and Techniques of Portuguese Painters from 1850-1918. This study aims to: contribute to the clarification of the processes of transmission and diffusion of technical knowledge; provide information on artists training in oil painting technique; determine the availability of artist’s materials in nineteenth century Portugal; and identify the painter’s knowledge on their materials. The methodology involves the collection and study of historical documents, examined in combination with parallel studies involving laboratory analyses undertaken by a multidisciplinary team from the Crossing Borders Project.
