Sunanda Chhetry

Junior Researcher

Sunanda Chhetry joined the CryoEM@NOVA Horizon Europe project in October 2025 as a Junior Researcher. She is a nucleoprotein biochemist and an aspiring structural biologist with a strong interest in elucidating the molecular mechanisms that govern complex biological assemblies. She received her PhD in 2025 from the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, where she investigated the molecular mechanism of a novel CRISPR-Cas system. During her doctoral research, she gained extensive experience in nucleoprotein complex biochemistry, RNA biochemistry, protein–nucleic acid interaction studies (both in vitro and in vivo), and fluorescence spectroscopy. Following her PhD, she joined the Department of Chemistry at Umeå University as a Research Assistant, focusing on the structural organization of the bacterial divisome complex. During this period, she developed strong expertise in negative staining EM, cryo-TEM sample preparation, collection and data analysis. Sunanda is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in the CRYOEM@NOVA group, where her research aims to understand the assembly pathways of ribosomes in pathogenic microorganisms using structural and biochemical approaches. Her work aims to advance the understanding of ribosome biogenesis and its implications for antimicrobial research.
