Guilherme Vilela Alves is a PhD student fellow at the Macromolecular Crystallography and Cryo-EM@NOVA Labs of UCIBIO, NOVA School of Science and Technology (NOVA FCT), NOVA University Lisbon, working in Structural Biology, under the supervision of Doctor Cristiano Mota, Professor Maria João Romão and Professor Hartmut Luecke. He holds a MSc in Biochemistry for Health and a BSc in Applied Chemistry, both of which he graduated top of his class, with a final grade 19 out of 20, at NOVA FCT. He has been awarded 7 scholarships for his academic accomplishments, including an award for the Best Science student to graduate in a BSc, at NOVA FCT in 2019/2020. His MSc thesis, conducted at the Macromolecular Crystallography Lab (UCIBIO) focused on X-ray Crystallography studies of a high-activity W-Formate dehydrogenase and resulted, so far, in 4 peer-reviewed publication in international journal (3 as first author, 2 in high impact journals), 1 oral communication (awarded best Macromolecular Crystallography oral communication), 5 course attendances and respective Poster Communication and 17 Structures deposited in the Protein Data Bank. He had the opportunity to integrate the teams of 3 research projects (Aldehyde oxidase, Formate dehydrogenase and Polyhydroxyalkanoate synthase) and recently travelled to the European Synchrotron (ESRF) in Grenoble (France) to perform cutting-edge High Pressure freezing experiments. He also participated and co-organized several scientific dissemination events and tutored different MSc and BSc students.
