Spin-off Des Solutio will make the cosmetic area more ecological

The recent spin-off Des Solutio resulted from the developed research on natural solvents, carried by the group of Professor Ana Rita Duarte and Doctor Alexandre Paiva. The company aims to develop safe and environmentally friendly products, based on Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADES), which can replace other toxic organic solvents commonly used in the cosmetic area. NADES offer many benefits over those solvents, once they are entirely derived from natural compounds such as organic acids, amino acids and sugars, found in a wide range of plants.

Brainstormig session to discuss new applications of DES, with the participation of a Post-Doc researcher from iMed.ULisboa

The Des.solve team invited a scientist from an external institution to a brainstorming session, in order to discuss new developments and applications for Deep Eutectic Solvents. The invited researcher was Liane Moura, a Post-Doctoral Fellow at iMed.ULisboa (Faculty of Pharmacy of University of Lisbon) and member of BioNanoScience group. Liane is focused on the development of nanovaccines and characterization of the immune modulatory effect in melanoma and breast cancer mouse models, and the possible application of DES as adjuvants in nanoparticle formation was discussed.

New publication in Journal of Chromatography A.

Human serum albumin (HSA) is an important biopharmaceutical agent that has the capacity to carry diverse molecules and increase their circulation half-life time, but also to function as a disease biomarker.

Different chromatographic and non-conventional approaches for its purification were explored by Raquel dos Santos together with Carina Figueiredo, Aline Viecinski, Ana Pina, Arménio Barbosa and Cecília Roque and are now published in the Journal of Chromatography A.

Thesis defense: Alexandre Guillaume and the Jurassic microvertebrates of Portugal

Alexandre Guillaume and the Jurassic microvertebrates of Portugal

Student Alexandre Guillaume, now master, defended his master's thesis on paleontology, on November 20th. His thesis was vertebrate microfossils form the Late Jurassic of Lourinhã, as a result of a research conducted at FCT Nova University of Lisbon and Lourinhã Museum.

The candidate passed sucessfully with the classification of 19 values.

Thesis Defense: André Saleiro

Student André Saleiro, now master, defended his master's thesis on paleontology, on November 5th. His thesis was about the campaigns that have taken place in Wyoming (United States) for the collection of fossil dinosaur materials.

These expeditions were a collaboration between the American Museum of Natural History (New York, E. U.A.) and the FCT NOVA University of Lisbon, some of the material collected was prepared at the Lourinhã Museum.
