Brief Bio
I am a marine biologist with an M.Sc. in Marine Ecological Modelling and Ph.D. in Environmental Science, completed in 2011, during which I became specialised in Marine Ecotoxicology. My Ph.D., fundaded by an FCT grant, was done at FCT-NOVA (at the former IMAR pole that preceded MARE-NOVA), in collaboration with the Universities of Cádiz and Córdoba (Spain). I was supervised by Maria Helena Costa, T. Àngel DelValls and Juan López Barea, respectively. My research subject concerned effects and responses of flatfish to contaminated estuarine sediments. My keen interest in 'omics', genotoxicology and histopathology arose then.
My first post-doc (2011-2015) was done at MARE-NOVA and INSA (Instituto Nacional de Saúde Dr. Ricardo Jorge), being advised by Maria Helena Costa and Maria João Silva, respectively, following a grant by FCT. This work dealt more closely with the human-marine environment interface and brought the opportunity to begin working in vitro as well. I also diversified my research activities towards, climate change, animal pathology and biotechnology. It was followed by a second post-doc at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, at the Department for Environmental Medicine (2015-2015), where I worked with Bengt Fadeel on Nanosafety and Nanotoxicology. At this stage I enhanced my expertise on in vitro testing, 'omics' and bioinformatics.
I returned to Portugal in 2016 to follow a position as Auxiliary Researcher at FCT-NOVA, enabled by an Investigator FCT starting grant (IF/00265/2015) aiming at starting a project and a team to work on marine biotechnology by exploring novel bioproducts from marine Polychaeta. However, I collaborate in many other research projects related to toxicology and marine science. I coordinate the SeaTox Lab at the UCIBIO research unit.
