ITQB-UNL

ITQB is the leader of the largest Associated Laboratory in Portugal, which includes also IBET, IGC and CEDOC. ITQB is devoted to research and graduate training (MSc/PhD) in a highly multidisciplinary atmosphere comprising chemistry and life sciences. Researchers and students benefit from outstanding research facilities, equipment, and support services. ITQB secures most of their funds for research in a competitive basis. It has 140 ongoing projects, out of which 10 are funded by the EU, amounting to 15 M€. In 2007-11 ITQB published 1,045 ISI papers and these have been cited 13,364 times. ITQB, as leading institution, was responsible for 20% of the Portuguese publications in Nature and Science in the period 2006-2010. Between 2009 and 2013, 128 PhD students have passed through the ITQB PhD Program, in a total of 26 students per year on average. In 2011, 45 PhDs were awarded.

IHMT-UNL

IHMT is a young centenary institution, unique in the Portuguese academy. Since its inception, the Institute has been at the forefront of research directed at tropical endemic diseases, and these lines are still part of its current work, reinforced by research work on tuberculosis, several viral diseases prevalent in the tropics. The WHO recognized the quality of its performance, when it assigned us the status of Collaborating Center for Health Workforce Policy and Planning. During the last 5 years (2008-12) regular competitive funding has been secured by IHMT, an average of 1,9M€/year has been obtained through competitive national (FCT, industry, consultancy and others – 74%) and EU/FP7 programs (26%).
