The PURE project, coordinated by Prof. Cecília Roque, was awarded a financial funding by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 FET Open programme.

This project is coordinated by Prof. Cecília Roque within UCIBIO, FCT-NOVA but the consortium has the participation of three other institutions: Universität für Bodenkultur Wien (Austria), Universität Bayreuth (Germany) and Institute of Experimental and Technological Biology (Portugal).

The project started in October and there was already a well-succeeded kick-off meeting last week. Over the next 4 years, this multidisciplinary team proposes to rethink and reprocess the way biopharmaceuticals are produced, which include biological drugs such as antibodies and viral particles, used in cancer treatment and vaccination, respectively. Although biopharmaceuticals are critical in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of many diseases, they are not easily available to those in need, either due to the high cost or to low manufacturing yields. The PURE project reprocesses the way advanced bio-based materials are currently purified, through the design of nanofibres that bind with high precision to biological products.
