Tallinn University of Technology (TTÜ), the only technological university in Estonia, is the flagship of Estonian engineering and technology education. The mission of TTÜ is to support Estonia’s sustainable development through R&D and science-based higher education in the field of engineering, technology, natural and social sciences. Here the synergy between different fields (technological, natural, exact, economic and health sciences) is created. TTÜ is internationally well known in oil shale technology, chemical and materials technology research and electrical engineering. TTÜ is a recognized scientific research centre that has investigated combustion techniques for oil shale and other similar fuels and issues of heat and mass transfer in thermal physics.
In Raw Materials field research and development is focused on developing mining waste utilization what also included oil shale ash usage, it also included collecting and systemization of data for geological and technological modelling of sustainable and environmentally acceptable oil shale mining and evaluation of oil shale reserves. In addition groundwater movement, water removal problems were investigated. Methods of different environment problems like dust, noise, seismic waves and stability of undermined areas were developed.
