BIOINORGANIC CHEMISTRY

BIOPHYSICAL CHEMISTRY OF PROTEINS

PROTEIN ENGINEERING

The "Biological Chemistry @ FCT NOVA" is a multidisciplinary group led by José J.G. Moura and Isabel Moura, hosted at LAQV, REQUIMTE, Department of Chemistry, NOVA School of Science and Technology (FCT NOVA).

Our research is primary focused on (i) structure/function characterization of metalloenzymes and metalloproteins of nitrogen, carbon and sulfur biogeochemical cycles, (ii) identification and characterization of new molecular systems involved in detoxification of metals and reactive oxygen species in pathogenic bacteria, (iii) degradation of hydrocarbons, (iv) biocorrosion, (v) biosynthesis of iron-sulphur centres, (vi) novel pathways involved in the formation/consumption of signalling molecules in humans, (vii) metabolism of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in humans, (viii) development of bioinorganic models of metalloenzymes (and metal-containing centres), (ix) biophysical and structural characterization of electron transfer complexes and development and implementation of protein docking protocols (BiGGER), (x) use of metalloenzymes in biosensing, bioremediation and bioenergy.
