Vasco Branco has a PhD in Toxicology (Faculty of Pharmacy University of Lisbon, 2012) and is presently a Researcher at the Research Institute for Medicines (www.imed.ulisboa.pt) His research concerns how the interaction between xenobiotics and antioxidant systems (thioredoxin; glutathione) modulates the unfolding of toxicity. Namely, the research is focused on understanding how mercury affects microglia activation and neural stem cell differentiation by sidrupting redox signalling. Knowledge of these early toxic events is a key tool for identifying potential biomarkers of early effect to be used in Human Risk Assessment.

He is author of several papers in the field of Toxicology and Redox Biology and has supervised several students. Since 2010 is also a Lecturer in Toxicology at the Faculty of Pharmacy University of Lisbon.
