Joana Pinto has a BSc degree in Biochemistry (2008), a MSc in Biomolecular Methods (2010) and a PhD in Biochemistry (2015) from the University of Aveiro. Her PhD thesis was focused on the investigation of potential biomarkers of several prenatal disorders through NMR-based metabolomic analysis of maternal blood plasma.

Her current research interests are 1) biomarker discovery using GC-MS and NMR based metabolomics for diagnosis, prognosis and treatment improvement; 2) development of new non-invasive diagnostic tools for cancer detection, based on the profile of urinary volatile compounds; 3) application of GC-MS and NMR spectroscopy for chemical characterization of cork; and 4) determine the impact of volatile organic compounds from cork in chemical, sensory and biological properties of wines.

Joana Pinto has published 1 book chapter, 22 articles in international peer-reviewed journals, 3 scientific conference proceedings, and presented 10 oral communications, including 4 invited lectures, and 18 poster communications. She co-supervised 2 MSc students, and is currently supervising 2 MSc students and co-supervising 1 MSc student. Recently, she was guest editor of the special issue Cancer Metabolomics 2018 of Metabolites (ISSN 2218-1989).
