Assistant Professor at the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (FCT NOVA).

Coordinator of MARlab.

Group Leader of the Ecotoxicoly and Risk Assessment Research Line at MARLab.

Marta Martins (MM) has a PhD in Environmental Sciences by FCT NOVA, a Master degree in Ecology, Management and Modelling of Marine Resources by the same faculty and a degree in Environmental Engineering by Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias. The Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) granted her PhD (2010-2014) and Pos-doctoral (2015-2018) fellowships. In 2009 and 2013, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation granted MM to support an internship at the NIOZ-Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, Texel, The Netherlands. Between 2002-2009, MM was a researcher at the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere, I.P. (IPMA, IP).

MM main research area is ecotoxicology, focusing on the toxicological interactions of environmental pollutants (from chemicals to nano- and microplastics) in marine organisms to improve the basis of Environmental Risk Assessment Strategies and environmental sustainability. MM is also interested on the development of new monitoring tools and new biomarkers. Her main technical skills are: genotoxicity assessment, RT-PCR, Western blot, gas-chromatography mass-spectrometry (GC-MS), enzymatic and non-enzymatic biomarkers, histopathology, in vivo, in vitro assays.

Since 2015, she is coordinator of the Cell Culture Lab at DCEA (FCT NOVA). MM is certified by FELASA with the Laboratorial Animal Science level C for directing animal experiments and  by ESTIV and ASCCT on Applied In Vitro Toxicology.

MM has several scientific publications in the field of Environmental Toxicology/Ecotoxicology and Aquatic Pollution. She is/was involved in 15 national and international research projects, being the Principal Investigator of two of them. MM is/was supervisor of doctoral, master and undergraduate students. MM is reviewer of several international peer-reviewed scientific journals. She is also member of the SETAC Education Committee, since 2019.
