João completed a bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering (2002/2006), a master's degree in Ecological Engineering (2006/2010), and a Ph.D. in Environmental Studies (2011/2015), at NOVA School of Science and Technology (FCT NOVA). João's research interest focusses on marine litter and microplastic pollution, and he has worked on this topic for 10+ years, in several projects in mainland Portugal (POIZON project) and in the Azores Archipelago (Azorlit project). In 2016, he moved to Galway, Ireland, where he was appointed work package leader to the JPI Oceans BASEMAN project. Shortly after the project ended, he was granted a Marie Skłodowska-Curie COFUND Collaborative Research Fellowship for a Responsive and Innovative Europe (CAROLINE) by the Irish Research Council (IRC), where he continues to develop work in the project IMP.act - Managing for microplastics: A baseline to inform policy stakeholders. João is a member of the Marie Curie Alumni Association, of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and of SETAC Europe. He is one of the co-founders of the Portuguese Marine Litter Association. He is involved in many volunteering activities regarding STEM and marine litter outreach, awareness and beach and/or river cleanups, and develops extra-curricular activities in theatre performance.
