Coordinator Marta Martins highlights our research on the cellular effects of nanoplastics. This was one of the first national studies to investigate how nanoplastics interact with human intestinal cells, triggering pro-inflammatory responses. Despite current limitations in quantifying actual exposure levels, these findings underscore the potential biological risks of chronic contact with plastic particles and reinforce the need for regulatory guidelines
