Implementation of Metabolic Activated Sludge Model in GPS-X
BIOENG participates in a joint Research-Industry Project with the Canadian company Hydromantis. The purpose of this work is to develop a metabolic model of the biological nutrient removal (BNR) process in the commercial software of Hydromantis, known as GPS-X.

Applications of Microsensors for the Monitoring of Gas-phase N2O Emissions from Full-Scale Wastewater Treatment Plants
BIOENG participates in a joint project with the Danish company Unisense and the Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA) in Spain. The purpose of this work is to assess Unisense nitrous oxide (N2O) sensors for measurement in the gas-phase, as previous applications have involved only dissolved N2O determination. This project investigates the main factors towards implementing this measurement technique for N2O emitted from wastewater treatment systems.

Production of microbial polysaccharides
In collaboration with 73100 Lda and Pharma73 S.A., BIOENG has developed several bioprocesses based on the use of different microorganisms for the production on polysaccharides, namely, bacterial extracellular polysaccharides and yeast cell-wall polysaccharides. The processes have been developed and optimized at lab-scale, and were patented by the companies that are currently performing their scale-up.
