Bulk chemicals

Utilization of renewable resources for the production of bulk chemicals has risen as a strong alternative to fossil feedstocks, not only for economical reasons as crude oil prices are very volatile and can turn very expensive, but also for environmental reasons as the chemical industry processes have always been regarded as environmentally damaging.

BIOENG is focusing in particular on the production on succinic acid and vanillin.

  • Production of succinic acid using the rumen bacterium Actinobacillus succinogenes using glycerol from biodiesel industry or or agroindustrial by-products such as carob pulp extracts
  • Production of vanillin using Streptomyces setonii using ferulic acid extracted from corn fiber.
