Curricular Structure (version 2, 2016-22)

in

The PhD Programme on "Technology Assessment" is organised over a 4 year structure, and the training courses are distributed during the first year with 60 ECTS like the other PhD programmes. During that period is supposed to start the research process leading to the final thesis.

The students who achieve distinction in their coursework are invited to prepare a PhD proposal, which includes the identification of a topic, discussion of methodological issues relating to the research and, where appropriate, a discussion of the resources to be used or developed. The proposal also identifies further areas of formal (class work and workshops) and informal study to be pursued in the course of dissertation research and writing. The PhD proposed plan will be approved in the first year, and discussed in a public workshop (Winter School) and re-evaluated after a public discussion of a more developed proposal (in a Doctoral Conference). The structure of the programme follows:

  • 1st Year

Code - training course

9783 - Interactive Methods of Participation and Decision A (6 ECTS)

9787 - Methods of Foresight Analysis (6 ECTS)

7927 - From Analogue to Digital: paths of modern technology (6 ECTS)

9789 - Evaluation in Science and Technology (6 ECTS)

12075 - Thesis Project I (15 ECTS)

12076 - Thesis Project II (15 ECTS)

9795 - Thesis (180 ECTS)

Summary:
Duration: 4 years
Credits: 240 ECTS
Mandatory scientific areas
Area Crédits (ECTS):
Technology Assessment - 222
Engineering Sciences - 6
History and Philosophy of Science and Tecnhology - 6
Economy and Management/Technology Assessment/Engineering Sciences - 6 (optional)

Technology Assessment is an inter-disciplinary research field. This is the only existing PhD programme in the world and several research institutions in Europe, US and Japan are following the example of Universidade Nova (UNL). The choices for including specific courses in this programme are related with the available resources at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology in other units of UNL, although students have also the possibility to choose add-on courses available at UNL, namely from the NOVA Doctoral School. These courses are allocated in the first year of studies.Students can also follow one of two tracks depending on their research focus: one is on Health Technology Assessment, and the other on Governance of Technology Assessment. Besides that they can also enroll in a Joint Doctorate Initiative with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany). The tracks have also the cooperation of national and international institutions and universities.

As explained above, technology assessment is related with decision making processes around science and technology options, and innovation structures. It can be related to policy counseling activities, or just to larger economic and financial options related to technological developments. The courses on Project are directly related with the monitoring of the student and to support him/her on the design of his/her research project for the thesis structure.
In general, the programme is very flexible and adequate to the needs of each student. Add-on option courses count on 5% of the total ECTS (but 20%, when only the course units are concerned, while 180 ECTS is for the thesis). The PhD programme provides a flexible programme, easily adjusted to the students’ individual needs.
