Kick-off Meeting of the ERA-IB Project: CHImerASE

This European Research Area in Industrial Biotechnology (ERA-IB-2) project involves a translational cooperation between Austria, Germany and Portugal. Cecília Roque, head of the Biomolecular Engineering Lab at UCIBIO - FCT/UNL, is one of the project leaders, together with Vlada B. Urlacher (UDUS, Germany), Christian Gruber (ACIB, Austria), Michael Breuer (BASF, Germany) and Helmut Schwab (MBT, Austria). The project is coordinated by Ricardo Branco (FCT/UNL).

The CHImerASE project started on July, and intends to develop a platform for the design of chimeric enzymes applied to new biotransformation steps. The team aims to deliver an efficient de novo designed enzyme to accomplish a high value industrial transformation that is currently only accessible via a laborious conventional chemical process. The consortium partners strongly believe that such innovative approach will represent a breakthrough in the biocatalysis field with a significant impact at industrial, economical and environmental levels.
